Here is a few facts concerning the 40s and 50s.  During the early part of the forties were the war years. ( W.W. II )  Things like gasoline and tires were rationed. There wasn't enough of either to bus kids to and from school. We want to remember Iowa was rural and farms were in increments of 80 acres. To handle the business of goverment, the county was set up in TOWNSHIPS. From what I understand a township was six miles by six miles. The idea was to have kids WALK to and from school and not have it be over two miles. I am not eminently qualified to discuss this. But as I understand it, children were farm hands. They had chores morning and night. Time taken up with walking cut into time working. We need to have these folks tell about this that lived it!  If my calculations are correct each township would have nine schools.
I can state for a fact, unless the weather was inclement we WALKED to and from school. Parents knew exactly how long it should take for the trip. So NO dilly-dalling.
Hope this gives you some kind of idea on this subject.   Larry Snow (CLHS 1959)
