Children and Their Friends
Get Together
I don't know the year of this picture but I think it was a birthday party
at that little pool next to Witkies there on North Shore Drive.
We look to be about 4 or 5 years old so that would put it around 1946-1947.
Pictured are Julie Hayden, Kato Volsted, Charles Ashland, Linda Hintzman and Jut Hughes.
(I found this picture amongst the Hayden family pictures.)
Good friends, Good times, Good memories, Bright Sun!
Words of Jut Hughes (Thanks Jut!)
The picture you have is probably one of Cato's birthday party taken at Whitke's when they had the swimming arcade at the old boat house - there was some sort of a tie-in between the boat house, restaurant, and Surf Ballroom (Cato's dad Henry was associated with the Surf and Carl Fox - the owner -and would get us foot-long hot dogs at either the arcade or "Randy's Cafe"). The boy in question is Charles Ashland, next door neighbor of the Volstad's and ringleader of the kids who hung out at Triangle Park. He was a classmate of my brother Duke and Dave Traub - last I heard still living in No. Iowa.
Dave Traub, Louis Crist and Lyndon Crist
Get together one fine summer day
in the early 40s.
(Probably 1943-1944?)
Possibly Louis or Lyndon will add a note?
The time frame is a bit later,
almost certainly 1946/47.
I was born in February of 1944
and appear to be two years old
or so in the picture. At any rate,
my caption is as follows:
David Traub (left) and the Crist brothers, Lou (rear) and Lyndon enjoying a
summer day in the backyard of 712 7th Avenue North (or 100 Division Street at this point in time). David's grandparents, the Eastmans, operated a service station across the street and he very likely spent considerable time with us and other neighborhood kids while in the area.
Words of Lyndon Crist Thank you Lyndon!
