I found this picture in my grandmother's (my mom's mother) scrapbook. On the back of the picture it says "dock at Clear Lake near City Park". It did not have a date, but if you look at the picture you know it goes way back...somewhere between 1886 and 1924.
My great-grandparents, Carl and Sofine Andersen, were born in Denmark. They came to America in 1884 and settled in Pierre, South Dakota. In 1885 they moved to Iowa. Carl worked for Burnapp who had a nursery in the east part of Clear Lake...he got 75 cents a day and had to pay rent for the house they lived in. In 1886 a banker in Mason City found out about him, and what a hard worker he was, and offered to set him up on a farm southeast of Clear Lake. They lived and worked on that farm from 1886 to 1893. They saved enough money during that 7 years to buy their own 160 acre farm northwest of Clear Lake. In 1910 they moved to a 40 acre farm northwest of the fish hatchery...a mile from Clear Lake. In 1914, they retired and moved to a home at 306 North Fifth Street in Clear Lake. Sofine passed away in 1924. At this time Carl moved in with my grandparents (his daughter). Carl passed away in 1947 at the age of 84. They are both buried in the Clear Lake cemetery. They had 8 children....one being my grandmother, Carrie.
