enjoying the Lake in the 50s.
"Swimming - They used to have a wooden raft anchored right off of city beach with a low board on it. A CL student, about 10 or 12, I think his last name was Ward, hit his head on the underside of the raft and drowned. He was pulled up on the beach and a failed effort was made to resuscitate him. His funeral was at the old Methodist Church.
Beverly Poole had a mishap on the low board one day and took a huge (by any standard) chunk of flesh out of her lower leg. I remember thinking that she had the presence of mind to press on the exposed veins to stop the blood flow while some of us went for help. The life guard, possibly one of the Merriman twins, who also taught me and my sisters to swim, took the row boat out to retrieve her. There was also a slide and a large wheel in the lake at Witke's Beach. Len Olson used to work at the marina there. I thought that it was so cool that he could drive speed boats."

Town Docks
These four pictures are from Bob Moninger
The Princess- 1912
Bob rode in it in 1954
and I'm sure many of us
took the boat trip during
the 40s or 50s.
What a treat!
