Another 'Happy Days' Place
in Clear Lake during the 50s.
Share with us your memories of time spent here!
Remember when the 'Long Long Trailer' came to the Lake, the Lucy and Desi Arnez movie?
Just look at that beautiful old building that we took so much for granted in our youth.
I'd love to live above there now!!
Barb Moninger May (1959)
I remember going on a date to see Gone With the Wind and it so long, one part was shown the first night and then next part the following night.
Thanks to Naila Clough Erwin (1960) for the picture of the Corner Drug
and the Lake Theater.
Remember the Saturday afternoon matinees and the Battle of the Cowboys?
Who won, Gene Autry or Roy Rogers!
(I voted for Gene, how about you?)

"Look closely and you'll see the chairs stacked near the windows upstairs at the Opera House, located on North 4th Street. The Opera house, now known as the Lake Theater, was built by John Halvorson and S.J.Clausen in 1890 at the total cost of $8000."
Lake Theater: I worked at the Lake Theater selling tickets in the mid-sixties-remember the smell and taste of that buttery popcorn, Turkish Taffy, Holloway Suckers? What about the "cry-room" upstairs? It was fun to sneak up there and sit in front of the picture window to watch the show. Remember the ticket sheets we purchased in grade school and they tore off the coupon when we went to see Ma & Pa Kettle or Frances the Talking Mule? I believe they cost us a dollar for ten tickets that covered every Saturday Matinee all summer. My mother (who is now 95) recalls that in the 30's it was a nickel to go to the movies and on Saturday nights during intermission they would have a drawing----she won a fur coat one evening! The other theater in the 50's was The Park Theater and it was right across the street from the city park on the south side. It became the VFW until the new one was built a couple years ago and now has been torn down. The Park was known for showing the Disney movies.

I found a booklet with this as a cover.
This booklet, Clear Lake, IA, was put together by Robert Beecfher Stuart. His title page says "A Boys Reminiscence in Commenoration of 50 summers in Clear Lake." July 17, 1984. Most of the pictures are the Stuart family.
