Ann Erickson
Girl from Iowa drowns
in lake; Sister Revived
(The article reads:)

   CLEAR LAKE- Funeral arrangements for Ann Marie Erickson, 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn  Erickson, who live southeast of Clear Lake, will be held Monday at 1PM, at Zion Lutheran Church.  Pastor Richard Ellingson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Ann Erickson was drowned Thursday in Lake Michigan at Racine, Wis, while playing in the surf.  She was with her parents and sisters on a supervised and crowded beach when suddenly she and her sister, Ruth 13, were swept off their feet.  The water was up to their chests when they were pulled out into deeper water by the undertow.
   The father on shore noted the girls were in difficulty and called the lifeguard.  The guard reached the older girl first, as she was floating on top of the water and was still conscious.  When he came back to get Ann she was harder to find and had been under the water for some time.
   Rescue squads arrived and gave mouth-to-mouth as well as every known method of resuscitation.  The older girl was revived shortly but efforts on Ann were given up an hour later.
   Surviving the girls are her parents, two brothers, Glenn 19, and Eric 16; three sisters, Ellen who will be graduated from nurses training next week at Waterloo; Ruth 13, and Bernice, 6, and her grandmother, Mrs. Chris Thompson, Racine Wis.
   Ann Marie was born May 25, 1949 at Mason City.  She was in the sixth grade at Central School, was a member of the Junior Choir and Zion Lutheran Church and Sunday school.
   The Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

One of my fondest memories is going home with Ann after church at Zion.  We would have dinner then get to play in the haymow in the afternoon--when I got home I would have hay-fever and asthma for a few days and right away look forward to going again!  It was such fun for a "city kid"!    I was in northern Minnesota when she died and my god-parents, Don & Arlie Gabrielson drove up to bring me back so that I could sing with the Junior Choir for her funeral.         Merlea Amundson Schultz '67

Memories
CHILDREN OF THE HEAVENLY FATHER

Children of the heav'nly Father
Safely in His bosom gather;
Nestling bird nor star in heaven
Such a refuge e'er was given.

God His own doth tend and nourish;
In His holy courts they flourish;
From all evil things He spares them;
In His mighty arms He bears them.

Neither life nor death shall ever
From the Lord His children sever;
Unto them His grace He showeth,
And their sorrows all He knoweth.

Though He giveth or He taketh,
God His children ne'er forsaketh;
His the loving purpose solely
To preserve them pure and holy.

Lo, their very hairs He numbers,
And no daily care encumbers
Them that share His ev'ry blessing
And His help in woes distressing.

Praise the Lord in joyful numbers;
Your Protector never slumbers.
At the will of your Defender
Ev'ry foeman must surrender.
