Life since 1963:

1963-64: Attended Cornell College
1965: Married Bud Beamer
1967: Graduated from University of Iowa
1967-68: Taught kindergarten in Iowa City
1968: Moved to Portland, OR where husband interned, Son Todd born Sept. 1968.
1969-71: Lived on Warm Springs Indian Reservation; Bud only physician for 2100 Native Americans; I substituted in local elem. school; Daughter Anne born May 1970
1971-73: Lived in Santa Rosa, CA during Bud's family practice residency
1973-74: Lived in Mason City, IA during Bud's surgical residency; Being close to family was wonderful but short lived.
1974: Moved to Madras, OR where Bud joined Madras Medical Group; Daughter Jennie born July 1979; Demands of being a small town family practitioner and the only general surgeon were great and although we made time for activities with the kids, our own relationship suffered and Bud and I separated in 1983, divorced in 1984.
1984-87: Moved to Portland, OR with my two daughters.
1985: Married Rev. Dr. Emmett Shortreed, the minister of the church we attended.  Emmett has two daughters from a previous marriage: Bethan (1970) and Bridget (1975); I was a substitute teacher in the Portland Public Schools.
1987-95: Moved to Idaho Falls, ID where Emmett was the minister at Trinity United Methodist Church (UMC); I taught kindergarten full-time.
1995-1999: Moved to Medford, OR where Emmett was the minister of the local UMC; I was a substitute teacher in the local elementary schools; June 1997 life was changed forever when our son Todd drowned.  Other great losses were the deaths of my dad (1989) and mom (1995).  Family has always been important in my life journey and losing my parents and son significantly changed life for me.  Another loss came when my husband Emmett had deep brain penetration surgery to correct a lifelong tremor (1998).  The surgery wasn't successful; it impacted his speech and short term memory, and due to a worsening neurological condition, he had to take disability.  We switched roles.  I went back to teaching full time; we returned to Central Oregon (Bend).  I got a teaching position with the Bend-LaPine School District (1999).  This brought us near our daughters Annie and Jennie and their families.

My life now: 1999-Present

We live in the Deschutes National Forest outside Sunriver, OR, which allows for hiking, bow hunting, rafting and fishing within walking distance of our home.  I continue to teach at Three Rivers Elem. School in Sunriver, OR.  I am piloting a full day kindergarten program this year.  Being a lifelong learner is one of those goals I try to instill in my students and also embrace for myself.  Through the years I have continued professional development requirements by attending Portland State Univ.; Univ. of Oregon; Univ. of Idaho; BYU and Oregon State Univ. for postgraduate work in education.
Living close to our girls and their families gives us many opportunities for sharing in one another's lives.  Grandchildren visits are special times that bring so much JOY to our lives.  We talk daily with our girls and see them regularly.  Annie is a licensed massage therapist and Jennie a licensed esthetician.  They both work at Sage Springs Club & Spa at Sunriver Resort.  Anne & Ashaki have two daughters: Alannah (1995) and Aliyah (1998).  Jennie and Abel have two sons: Kalani (1998); Keanu (2002) and a daughter, Kayah (2007). One of the disappointments for us is that Emmett's daughters and their children live so far away.
Another benefit of living in Central Oregon is living close to my brother Todd Wilkins (C.L. class of '62) and sister Holly Wilkins Stork (Mason City class of '82) and their families.  They both reside in Klamath Falls, OR about 115 miles away.  My brother Bill Wilkins (C.L. class of '59) and his wife live in Spokane, WA.  He is recently retired and we have more opportunities to get together.
Our family has stayed close through the years and we are blessed by the strength and encouragement we share with one another.  Although I still feel like a little kid inside, my body has age related aches and pains and I have dealt with my share of health issues and surgeries, not to mention my support of the pharmaceutical industry as I follow physician recommendations to treat current health concerns.
I have enjoyed reading the profiles of classmates and am anxious to find others on our class website.  I look forward to attending our reunion this summer.  I will be retiring at the end of the 2009 academic year.  This will allow me more freedom to travel and get back in touch with special friends.  I am always grateful for my years growing up in Clear Lake and for all my classmates and friends.  I look forward to hearing about your lives.
