Career
Notes- US Navy Reserves
1960-66, active duty 1964-66 in the submarine service, Viet Nam veteran.
Graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara 1968, graduate work 1969, followed by nine
years teaching English in Salinas, California. From 1978 to 2003,I worked as a
police officer, detective, SWAT team sergeant, and detective sergeant, which
proved to be a bit less stressful than teaching high school students. I retired
from the Monterey police department.
Highlights of your
life- Growing up in Clear Lake
and reconnecting after retiring is a highlight. Traveling extensively with my
wife (she taught French and also speaks Spanish) continues to make us happy. I
have always been a fan of old cars, and our garage holds a small collection of
them; I enjoy working on and maintaining them, and Nancy likes them too.
Retiring in time to just enjoy life is a highlight.
Memories from your
school days- School in
Clear Lake was full of exciting experiences--homecoming, marching in the band,
scrimmaging with the upperclassmen, moving to the new high school, every "last
day of school," and the official start of summer, dating, getting sent to Mr.
Smith's office (only once). Best of all was attending a small school,
knowing almost everyone, and getting a first class education in spite of not
always paying attention. Remember class picnics? Remember the "Music Man"
premier in Mason City? How about seeing Buddy Holly's last performance (also
Richie and the Bopper)?
What teachers we had in
high school, and how fun it is to remember their quirks, such as one math
teacher twirling a piece of chalk on his lip, another civics teacher having a
tiny little bit of spit connecting both lips, another strutting to the front of
English class in the always tight sweater, and one who was always good for a
WWII story in Spanish class. Principal G.R. Smith was as good as they come, too;
I never worked for one as admirable during my teaching years.
People I've Stayed
In Touch With- Many classmates,
especially Bob E., Mike D., Tom C., Earl, Peta, Gloria, (how cool that just one
name can be obvious) Knute, Dave L., Jim R. and others, including the Mongols. I
miss Mike Sill especially.
Favorite song from
50s or 60s (for background
music on your page)- "True Love Ways" or anything by Buddy Holly.
