CLEAR LAKE -Valera "Val" Ann Hovelson, 64, of 5851 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2008) at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Valera Hovelson Memorial Fund.
Val was born the daughter of Raymond and Clarice (Johnson) Rooks in Meservey.
Val graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1961 and married Jim Coyier on Oct. 21, 1961.
She worked for many local and area businesses including E.F. Johnson, Unisys, and Alexander Battery Mfg. After attending NIACC, Val worked at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
She was joined in marriage to James Hovelson on April 16, 1994, and at this time in her life, began working at Wal-Mart in Mason City and was blessed with many new friends and acquaintances.
Val was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and was active in the Associates of Retarded Citizens.
Val enjoyed reading books or magazines and poems as a pastime at home. She enjoyed family and friends very much and was strong in faith throughout her whole life. As a hobby, Val enjoyed crafting and would on occasion give items she made as gifts that would touch everyone that received them. Her favorite thing in life was having family home for the holidays and special times during the year.
Val is survived by her daughter, Dawn Coyier-Brosdahl and her husband, Jody, of Gretna, Neb., and their two children, Tad and Trent Brosdahl; two step-daughters, Lisa Nelson and her husband, Neal, of Belmond, their children, Kyle and Katie Nelson; Ann Brown and her husband, lst Lt. Christopher, of Ft. Benning, Georgia, their children, Taylor, Tess and Tatum Brown; a step-sister, Connie Pals and her husband, Wayne, of Thornton.
She was preceded in death by her father, step-mother, Lorraine Rooks Woiwood; son Randy; husband, Jim Hovelson; niece, Shelley Simmer; two mothers-in-law, Evelyn Coyier and Vida Hovelson.
