"He'll Have To Go"   by Jim Reeves
[Written by Audrey & Joe Allison]

Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.  Let's pretend that we're together all alone.  I'll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low.  And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go.
Whisper to me, tell me do you love me true.  Or is he holding you the way I do.  Though love is blind make up your mind I've got to know.  Should I hang up or will you tell him he'll have to go.
You can't say the words I want to hear while you're with another man.  Do you want me answer yes or no?
Darlin' I will understand.  Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.  Let's pretend that we're together all alone.  I'll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low.  And you can tell your friend there with you, he'll have to go.

We have Bert to thank for us all reconnecting after all these years.
It was his goal to visit as many of his classmates as possible.
He was responsible for many Rumbles and Reunions.
I think that he would want it to be said
'Remember me with smiles and laughter or don't remember me at all'.
That was a quote from a Little House on the Praire show and one I think Bert would like.
He was a great friend and he will be missed terribly.
Bert- Thanks for all your work from the Class of 1960!

Barney and Ruth last November when they went to the Gospel Awards show at Opryland.  It was in the Roy Acuff Theater.  Before they went to the theater, they stopped at a restaurant to eat.  Most of the square dancers from the club Ruth belongs to were there and they had a great time.  In the background are some of the square dancers.  "A bus from Opryland came to the Senior Center here in town and picked us up.  The pictures of us on the bus, Barney took just by holding the camera up in front of us.  He takes a lot of pictures of us like that".

I was trying to find out where Phyllis Barnes might be and I think Ann Minkner Millard told me she thought Phyllis was Bert's sis.  I tracked him down and sure enough he was able to get me in touch with her.
In the several short visits I had with Bert I can honestly say he made my day each time and I know he made this world a much better place to live in because he was here with us.  I bumped into him in the park in Clear Lake and it just felt like old home week for lifelong friends.
Thanks to the Barnes Family, Class of 1960 and especially Bert for leaving this old 56er with some great memories of a friend, although much to short of time friend.
Thanks Bert and we will meet again.    Jerry L. Millard   Class of 1956

*A message to Bert's classmates from his Sister*.
I just went to his page and what a fine tribute to my Baby brother. Thank You all so much. We are so grateful to our Precious Lord for taking Bert home so quickly. His pain was very bad and God chose to take him out of it fast.  I found great comfort from my oldest sister,Neva. She said that Bert had gone to heaven and our precious Mom was waiting to welcome home her baby.  Neva went on to say that now Mom would spoil him rotten again and we would all have to go up there and straighten him out again.!! We all Loved our Baby Brother and we are sorry only for ourselves, because he's in such a wonderful place with his new body and No pain.
Thanks for remembering us in your Prayers. Much Love to All,  Phyllis Barnes Schneider
(Phyllis Barnes Schneider  Bert's sister and she is also a CLHS 1956 Classmate)

When we were in high school, I thought Bert was a "greaser" and didn't have anything to do with him   :-)   I told him that at a couple of our reunions.  BUT Bert proved to be so much more than that.   He is the reason the 45th class reunion took place.   He contacted me in 2004 and asked if I would help, which I did -- but it was only making calls to people.   He did the work and asked Chuck Clapsaddle to help at that end.  We all owe him a BIG THANK YOU!!  Because now we have a web site (thanks to Julie) and can keep connected better.
Bert is in a better place -- because he knew our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.   I am sure he will be watching and waiting to see if we have the BIG 50 in 2010!!!   WE ALL HAVE TO BE THERE!!  Thanks, Bert for all you did.   Barb Potts Matson (1960)

My name is Wesley Roberts Sr, One of his Uncles.  He had six Uncles and one Aunt on the Roberts side of the family.  Only two Uncles left.  Bert's Mother Vera was my Sister. Bert used to come to most of the Roberts Reunions in Savanna, Illinois each August.  He always brought along lots of humor and wit.  He generally wore his cowboy hat and was great with the children. We loved Bert and were very sorry about his passing on.  But, I know that he is in a much better place and still wearing his cowboy hat.  I received an email from Phyllis telling me about the 1960 site.  That is a great tribute to Bert.  Thank you for keeping it up.  I will pass the site along to my side of the family and thank you again.  Love,  Wes

"  I can not remember to much about Bert in school.  Our life style was so different for he was in town and I was a country girl and had to ride the bus.  Am so thankful for him and Barb getting the class reunion together.  To think I almost didn't go to the reunion and would of missed the most important part of my life.  We had the time of our lives and that was the start of our lives together.  We both were so happy from the very beginning, just didn't last long enough.  My prayers go out to all his family and friends.  He was the world to me.  On Sept 11,2006 was when he gave me my diamond and we became engaged.  He was just a wonderfully and happy guy.  From the love of his life and I will miss him so much.  Rest in peace "BERT"    LOVE FROM  YOUR SWEETHEART!!"

Friends..

Dad's memorial service will be held at the Rockwell Legion Hall (on Main Street in Rockwell) on Saturday December 22nd with a military service beginning at 1pm and visitation with family and friends following until 4pm.  I've attached a copy of Dad's obituary which was in the Mason City Globe Gazette.

God Bless you and Happy Holidays to you all!  Bob Barnes

This picture was taken on my deck in the summer of 2006.   Bert came through Lincoln on his way to Iowa.
He stayed overnight with us.

I know they both enjoyed what they did and the results thereof.

We only knew Barney for a short period but there was one feature about this special person that we will always remember, His Smile. When he walked into a room with his smile you just had to smile because he also carried a camera and he loved to take pictures. We will miss him dearly... especially his smile and his personality.
