Kato was born 5 July, 1941 and she passed away 20 October, 1977 in Los Angles, California.

My memories of Kato go way back to my early childhood. Our folks were friends and we got together as families. Kato and I both had a horse, her's was named Bud and mine was Jack. We did a lot of riding the wilds of Clear Lake and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Bud was a pinto, brown and white and Jack was a big bay gelding (16 hands). I lost track of Kato after she graduated and was saddened to hear that she has passed on. She was a sweet person and a good friend. Julie Hayden Traub (1960)

I don't know the year of this picture but I think it was a birthday party at that little pool next to Witkies there on North Shore Drive. We look to be about 4 or 5 years old so that would put it around 1946-1947. Pictured are Julie Hayden, Kato Volstad, Charles Ashland, Linda Hintzman and Jut Hughes. (I found this picture amongst the Hayden family pictures.)

The picture you have is probably one of Kato's birthday party taken at Witkies when they had the swimming arcade at the old boat house - there was some sort of a tie-in between the boat house, restaurant, and Surf Ballroom (Kato's dad Henry was associated with the Surf and Carl Fox - the owner -and would get us foot-long hot dogs at either the arcade or "Randy's Cafe"). The boy in question is Charles Ashland, next door neighbor of the Volstad's and ringleader of the kids who hung out at Triangle Park. He was a classmate of my brother Duke and Dave Traub - last I heard still living in No. Iowa.
