What’s happened since 1958?
B.A. in English from Luther College in Decorah in 1962; graduate work at Harvard and the University of Colorado, Boulder; M.A. in English from the University of Iowa in 1969. Following the footsteps of Miss Green, Miss Sponheim, and Miss Friedman, I became an English teacher and had the good fortune to practice my profession on four continents. I taught English at the Oil Companies School in Tripoli, Libya; Escola Pan Americana in Bahia, Brazil; and was the Humanities Coordinator for six years at the International School of Stavanger, Norway, my father’s hometown. I also taught in Minnesota, Iowa, Maine, and California. My students ranged from overprivileged Brazilians who came to class wearing rubies and emeralds to high risk young people at the Job Corps Center in San Jose, CA, who came to class talking about the drive-by shooting the night before and wearing T-shirts that said “Lil’ Mama Don’t Kick No Ass.”
During my eighteen years overseas, I was privileged to travel to over fifty countries. As with all good experiences, mine came with a price. In 1983 while on assignment in Brazil, my first husband, Peter M. Nowell, died as the result of a diving accident. Ten years later, I married the sweetheart I met in Paris in 1963 while on a grand tour of Europe with my college roommates. All in all, I am thankful for a career full of hard work, great rewards, and lots of surprises. I can’t think of anything I would rather have done.
What’s happening now?
I am writing books, reading, traveling, exploring, taking care of the critters and birds in our back yard, serving as Cultural Heritage Director of our Sons of Norway lodge, and volunteering once a week at the York County Homeless Shelter.
Are you planning to attend our 50th reunion on August 29?
Yes. Looking forward to it.
With whom have you kept in touch?
Miriam Strum Odden, Alice Ashland Rasmussen, and Richard Eliasen.
