Jim Hass
1956
I also kind of remember running into Jim on the observation deck of the Empire State Building on one of our weekends in NYC.  Jim Knapp 1958

Jim Hass was a neighbor when we were still in grade school.  He lived on North 14th St, just north of Jerry and Jim Van Loan.  The Merrimans later moved to that house.
I remember the time he hypnotized Jimmy Van Loan.  I also remember the old Ford Woody Jim drove.  After high school I lost touch with him but had an occasion to run into him later in Iowa City.  That little story follows.
Several years ago I was at my favorite watering hole in Iowa City, a bar called Georges Buffet.  Sitting at the bar one evening I saw a fellow that looked familiar.  But over time memories fade.  I asked him if he was Jim Hass and he denied it.  I sloughed it off but still watched him for a while and noticed this man had a habit of his thumb over his fingernails.
This eventually had smoothed them over time to where they almost appeared polished.  Jim used to do this.  So I persisted and said, "Come on I know you are Jim Hass."  This time he admitted it and said he was "under cover."  I don't know what that comment was about but we subsequently had several conversations over a beer or two and renewed our acquaintance.  Then as suddenly as he was in Iowa City, he was gone.  I am saddened to know of his passing.  I remember him as someone that was quite intelligent and always friendly to me.
